Our Tumi blocks are based on the popular Japanese children’s toy Tumi ishi.
Tumi ishi literally means piled rocks and is derived from the creativity that each child possesses to turn everyday objects (such as rocks) into a toy or a game. The original Japanese version of Tumi ishi blocks looks like pebbles or rocks made out of wood. Our version is more modern and we create the wooden blocks the same way we would shape our jewellery and other homeware products, by hand carving the wood into faceted shapes.
The game is to stack and balance the blocks as high as possible, which gets trickier with each added block.
Each set of Tumi Blocks consist out of 5 wood blocks. Two large size blocks, two medium sized blocks and one small block. Please note that due to the hand made process of these blocks and the use of natural materials such as wood, the blocks will not always look exactly the same in regards to wood grain and colour as shown in the product photos.
We hand finish each block with very fine sand paper to create a smooth silky surface of the blocks, and they are oiled with food-safe and toy-safe wood oil.
